Easter Time is the Time for...Immigrants?
Unless one has been under a very big rock for the past few days, then it is inevitable they are aware of the many protests occurring across this country concerning the laws of illegal immigration. An interesting and enlightening article concerning the incidents may be read here: http://www.comcast.net/news/index.jsp?cat=GENERAL&fn=/2006/04/11/365384.html&cvqh=itn_immigrant
While I do agree that it is a privilege to live in this country, and more opportunity may abound in this nation more than any other, I do not fully understand the logic of said protestors' approach. While many of them are obviously legal U.S. citizens, I would be willing to wager several, if not many of them, are still in that "transitional*" stage. Call me crazy, but I fail to see how, if you are a "transitional" so to speak, that it is in your best interest to parade around on the street waving flags and such to those whose best interested is to take you back to the area from whence you came. In short, if you're trying to hide, do not walk around with a banner that more or less states "Here We Are...Whatcha Gonna Do?" While I do hope nothing drastic will happen throughout the course of these events, I would be shy to accept any favors from government officials during this time period were I a fellow protestor. For instance, should a large Greyhound bus commissione by the INS appear to help "escort" the individuals home after a long day, I have the feeling that it may not take them back to the home they currently occupy, but one that is a little south of the border.
*Transitional meaning an immigrant that has not yet obtained the legal rights to live in this country. I think it is better than calling them "illegal aliens," and it sure beats the hell out of "wetback."
